introduction

Director of Compliance, SFC

farmer (once upon a time)

once upon a time

there was POSIX

there was also a new OS with a proprietary API

developers and users were locked in

you fixed that

once upon a time (the sequel)

with the skills/tools, all tractors were repairable

but new tractors now proprietary: parts/apps/tools

farmers are locked in - it's the software, again

from Unfair Corporate Tactics, High Repair Costs

The Tractor Repair Scam: John Deere's Digital Lockdown

Alabama farmer sues John Deere for 'right to repair'

My grandfather's John Deere would support our Right to Repair

American farmer demands right to repair own
equipment amid soaring costs: 'Money is tight'

once upon a time (the sequel)

with the skills/tools, all tractors were repairable

but new tractors now proprietary: parts/apps/tools

farmers are locked in - it's the software, again

fortunately, we solved this before, and have the tools

but the future has not been written

how does it work this time?

we have an advantage: Wine is already in use

because Wine is a "Library" under LGPLv2.1+ ...

... users must be able to make practical changes to it

"if you distribute copies of the library, whether gratis or
for a fee, you must give the recipients all the rights that
we gave you. ... If you link other code with the library,
you must provide complete object files to the recipients,
so that they can relink them with the library after
making changes to the library and recompiling it."

"the scripts used to control compilation and
installation of the library"

how does it work this time?

we have an advantage: Wine is already in use

because Wine is a "Library" under LGPLv2.1+ ...

... users must be able to make practical changes to it

just as farmers made practical changes to their tractors

no fate but what we make for ourselves

and for the users

this time, those users make or break the global food supply

they had the tools, but the tools were taken away

farmers fix/repair/improve when the tools are available

we can give them back their tools

we need you to make this happen
